(FI) Nitraatti sai somepuolella pari haastetta: nimeä kymmenen itsellesi merkityksellistä kirjaa ja nimeä kymmenen elokuvaa jotka ovat sinuun vaikuttaneet. Tarkoitus oli listata yksi per päivä somepuolella ilman selityksiä, mutta koska Nitraatti on aina ollut vähän huono värittämään rajojen sisällä ja koska Nitraatti spämmää somea joskus vähän liiankin kanssa ja koska Nitraatti haistoi blogientryn paikan, niin haasteet käydään läpi näin. Kirjahaaste tuli suomeksi ja elokuvahaaste englanniksi, joten noilla kielillä myös aiheet mennään. Järjestys on suunnilleen se, missä Nitraatti on näihin elämänsä aikana törmännyt, viimeisenä uusin tuttavuus.
(EN) Nitrate got a couple of challenges on the social media side of things: name ten books that are meaningful to you and name ten films that have influenced you. The original idea was to list one of each every day without explanations. Since Nitrate is not very good at coloring inside the lines and because Nitrate sometimes has a bad habit of spamming without stuff like this to add to it and because Nitrate sensed an opportunity for a blog entry, he chose this way to handle the challenges. The book challenge was received in finnish and the movie one in english, so those will be the languages used for each as well. The order is roughly the one in which Nitrate ran into these during his life, with the latest one mentioned last.
KYMMENEN MERKITYKSELLISTÄ KIRJAA
1. Aino Wuolle: Suomi-Englanti-Suomi taskusanakirja (1980)
Tämä kirja Nitraatilta löytyy vieläkin. Joskus kasarin alussa hankittu pieni tietopaketti, joka oli aktiivikäytössä hyvinkin sen pari vuosikymmentä. Nitraatin lempparikieli.
2. Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson, Frank Mentzer: Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set (1983 revision)
Nitraatin elinikäisen ropeharrastuksen lähtölaukaus. Larry Elmoren kansitaide on mieleen syöpynyt -osastoa.
3. Peter von Bagh: Elämää Suuremmat Elokuvat (1989)
Suomalaisen elokuvakritiikin yksi suuria nimiä oli herra PvB (1943-2014). Ennen nettiaikaa näillä raukoilla rajoilla piti tyytyä lukemaan monista klassikoista, joiden näkemisestä saattoi vain haaveilla. Petteri pisti kuitenkin tekstillään (ja radio-ohjelmallaan) (mieli)kuvat liikkumaan.
4. Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons: Watchmen (1987)
Nitraatti on aina ollut myös sarjakuvien ystävä. Parasta kautta aikain lienee tarjonnut kasarin lopulla eteen sattunut graafinen novelli Watchmen. DC on muutenkin ollut aina Nitraatille Marvelia mieluisempi (RIP Stan Lee, muuten).
5. Douglas Adams: Linnunradan käsikirja liftareille (1979)
Adamsin scifihupailuun ei ole päässyt ikinä väsymään. Myös tarinan britti- ja suomikuunnelmaversiot ovat ihan yhtä tasokkaita.
6. J.R.R. Tolkien: Taru Sormusten Herrasta (1954-1955)
Nitraatti tavasi Sormuksen eka kertaa vasta täysi-ikäisenä ysärin alkupuolella. Sittemmin useamman kerran läpi plarattu kaiken itseään seuranneen länsimaisen fantasiakaman jonkin asteinen isä on maineensa arvoinen. Kersti Juvan ja Eila Pennasen käännös (1973-1975) on suomennosten eliittiä.
7. Bret Easton Ellis: American Psycho (1991)
Suunnilleen samoihin aikoihin Nitraatin silmämunien läpi eka kertaa kulkenut kasarin juppikauden kipein krapulatilitys. Tätä teosta ei voitane koskaan toteuttaa leffaksi ihan yksi yhteen, sillä niin vatsaa vääntävän roisisti Ellis merkkiteoksessaan veivaa. Jotenkin kuvaavaa, että julkisissa tätä lukiessa teki mieli peittää kannet kuin Jallu-lehdestä ikään. Mary Harronin leffa (2000) on silti ihan ok yritys tavoittaa teoksen raivoisa, kliininen henki.
8. Stephen King: Salem's Lot (1975)
King on Nitraatin lempikirjailija ja Salem's Lot (suom. Painajainen) on Nitraatin lemppari-King. Vai olisiko sittenkin Kolkuttajat? Tai Uinu, Uinu Lemmikkini? Tai Tukikohta? Tai...Tai... Salem's Lot on vampyyritarina jossa tutun kingmäisesti alun idyllinen pikkukaupunki on lopussa elävä helvetti. Nitraatin eka lukukerta tälle mainiolle kauharille viivähti 2000-luvun puolelle, ja oli yksi viimeisiä tuolloin vielä tavaamattomia Kingejä. Sokeri pohjalla, todellakin.
9. Mika Waltari: Sinuhe egyptiläinen (1945)
Tässä toinen merkkiteos joka tuli luettua epätavallisen myöhään. Tämän vuosikymmenen eka vuosi oli Nitraatilla aika vaikea äidin äkillisen poismenon johdosta. Sinuhe sattui jostain syystä samaan aikaan hyppysiin paikallisessa kirjakaupassa. Juovuttavan väkevä teksti meinasi viedä siinä paikassa jalat alta ja Nitraatin pitikin jatkaa kauppatutustumista kirjaan kyykyssä. Kotiluennassa sai sitten onneksi maata vaikka sikiöasennossa. Epäilemättä Waltarin kertoma Sinuhen ikävä tarina auttoi jollain tavalla Nitraattiakin surutyössä, siitä kirjailijalle ikuinen kiitos. Sinuhe ei ollut eikä ole 'kärpäsen surinaa korvissani'.
10. Kazuo Ishiguro: Ole luonani aina (2005)
Vuosituhannen uudemmasta päästä päräyttävin lukukokemus on ehdottomasti ollut tämä Ishiguron dystopia, josta mielensä pahoittaa pitkäksi aikaa. Nuorten paremmasta tietämätön ja kohtaloihinsa alistuva asenne jättää jäljen, ja Ishiguro jättää raivostumisen lukijan vastuulle.
11. Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, Neil Strauss, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil: Mötley Crüe: The Dirt - Törkytehdas (2001)
Pikku bonuksena poiminta Nitraatin lukulistalta, joka on aina pitkä kuin mikä. Nitraatilla ei uni tule, ellei saa lukea kirjaa. Tällä hetkellä luvun alla on Truman Capoten 'Kylmäverisesti' (mainio), mutta tämä pitäisi kyllä viimeinkin hommata ja lukea!
TEN FILMS THAT INFLUENCED ME
1. Pekka ja Pätkä Sammakkomiehinä (FIN 1957)
Nitrates mom wrote that this was the first film Nitrate ever saw in a movie house (a revival - Nitrate is not *that* old). Fair enough. Must have left an impression, since films are Nitrates favorite form of art and favorite thing in general!
2. Invaders from Mars (USA 1953)
First memories of watching films that Nitrate has are from early childhood summers. Back then we had two tv-channels in this country. One of them played old scifi, horror and fantasy films during the summer. Invaders was one of them. In hindsight it is easy to see what young Nitrate was most terrified here: the parents being taken over by the Martians must have felt as horrifying to young Nitrate as it did to the films young lead David (Jimmy Hunt). Even today this is a very fine early 50s red scare scifi-entry, and one of the building blocks of Nitrates tastes for sure.
3. The Exorcist (USA 1973)
Some films you simply should not see too early. The Exorcist is surely one of those. Even though young elementary school Nitrate did not see it all the way through, what he did see was enough to scar him for years. Seen as an adult this is superior horror, but definitely not for kids even now. Or ever.
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark (USA 1981)
Most of the entries on this list are from Nitrates 1980s VHS-era. No exception here. Raiders was seen a lot. A lot a lot. My cousins played a trick on me the first time I saw it: when Marion seems to get blown up in the middle of the film, they made sure I believed she was dead. To this day I get an extra kick out of it when Indy later in the film finds her in the tent, alive and as sassy as ever!
5. Sister Emanuelle (Italy 1977)
We kids watched everything, no matter if it was meant for us or not. I believe this one was found hidden in some parents bookshelf. A cheap soft-core knock-off of something that itself was cheap soft-core. The early 80s VHS scene was surely the height of wondrous - and definitely not so wondrous - trash. Bonus educational value: we saw how babies get made!
6. The Terminator (UK / USA, 1984)
For Nitrate, James Cameron ruled the 80s VHS roost. Terminator was seen so many many times. Films Nitrate saw were mostly rentals and this was one of the first (and one of the very very few) films Nitrate owned back then. N first viddied The Terminator from a film collection of one friends big brother who had lots: The Shining, Being There, Take the Money and Run, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest etc etc. We saw those as well. Anyways; The Terminator is of course still one kick ass film - even though the VHS is now a blu-ray.
7. Edge of Darkness (UK, 1985)
Bit of a cheat since this is actually a mini-series, not a film, but Nitrate felt it has to be included. English series were and are something Finns like and they got and get a lot of air time here. YLE was pretty much based on BBC, after all. Anyways, Edge is on the list because Nitrate first saw it as a young teen and it is something of a watershed in Nitrates tastes turning towards more adult stuff as well. Edge is still a terrific and sad politics / eco / crime -thingie. Bob Peck is wonderful as the lead. Eric Clapton does the music.
8. Aliens (USA 1986)
Did Nitrate mention Jimmy Cameron? Why yes he did. N saw this one a zillion million times as well. N knows the dialogue of this film by heart. Still superb stuff and one of the best sequels of all time.
9. Gone With the Wind (USA 1939)
Nitrates desire for old Hollywood stuff was surely roused by seeing this gorgeous thing in the mid 80s. Still tending to that craving.
10. Blade Runner (USA/HK, 1982)
There used to be a joke among our circle of friends in the mid / late 80s, that if you couldn't fall asleep, you should put this on and you'd be counting sheep in no time. Must have been 1986 or so when Nitrate finally managed to stay awake all through it. Good thing too. One of those pure classics of the sci-fi genre (unlike the silly sequel). Nitrate got a big kick out of the (allegedely) accidentally found 1992 director's cut as well, and again from the Final Cut. Ever since N first properly saw and liked Blade Runner, his film tastes have only gotten tiny adjustments - at least compared to the impact Blade Runner made.
